Rotor

By Frederik Drost

A rotor is a component of a mechanical watch movement. It is a flat, weighted disc that is connected to the mainspring in an automatic watch and moves when the watch is worn or shaken. The movement of the rotor winds the mainspring, providing the power to keep the watch running. Rotors come in many different shapes and sizes and can be made of a variety of materials, including gold, steel, brass, and even plastic.
