Wheel

By Frederik Drost

Train A wheel train is a set of wheels in a mechanical watch that are responsible for transferring energy from the mainspring to the escapement. The wheel train consists of the barrel wheel, center wheel, third wheel, fourth wheel, escape wheel, and pallet fork. The barrel wheel is connected to the mainspring and rotates to wind the watch. The center wheel transfers energy from the barrel wheel to the third wheel, which drives the fourth wheel. The fourth wheel then drives the escape wheel, which is connected to the pallet fork. The pallet fork is responsible for controlling the release of energy from the mainspring and is the heart of the escapement. The wheel train is a critical part of a mechanical watch and is responsible for maintaining accurate timekeeping.
