Vane

By Frederik Drost

Vane is a type of watch component which is a metal disc that rotates to indicate the current time. It has a number of small arms or blades attached to it, and as the vane rotates, the arms move in sequence to indicate the hours, minutes, and seconds. It is usually found in pocket watches, but can also be found in some wristwatches. The vane is a popular choice for vintage timepieces, as the movement of the arms is often considered aesthetically pleasing.
