Moh’s Scale

By Frederik Drost

The Moh’s Scale is a tool used to measure the hardness of minerals. The scale is named after Austrian mineralogist Friedrich Mohs, who created it in 1812. The scale is based on the ability of one mineral to scratch another. The scale ranges from 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the hardest. On the Moh’s Scale, talc is a 1 and diamond is a 10. This scale is used by geologists, gemologists, and jewelers to determine the hardness of a mineral.
