A gasket is a mechanical seal which fills the space between two or more mating surfaces, generally to prevent leakage from or into the joined objects while under compression. Gaskets are usually made from elastomeric materials such as rubber, cork, neoprene, or a combination of these materials and are typically designed to be held in place by bolts, clamps, and other fasteners. Gaskets can also be used to provide vibration dampening, thermal insulation, and sound attenuation.
