Foliot

By Frederik Drost

A foliot is a type of watch mechanism used in early watches. It consists of two parallel arms, one of which is connected to a balance wheel and the other is connected to an escapement mechanism. The balance wheel and escapement are connected by a pin or a thin wire, and the motion of the balance wheel is regulated by a weight attached to the foliot arm. This type of mechanism was used for centuries and allowed for a more precise timekeeping than a simple pendulum.
