Clepsydra

By Frederik Drost

Clepsydra is a type of timekeeping device used in the ancient world to measure the passing of time. It uses a container filled with water, and a steady flow of water out of a small hole in the bottom. A notch or marker on the side of the container indicated the amount of time that had passed. The clepsydra was one of the earliest forms of accurate timekeeping, and was used by many ancient civilizations.
