I have long been a fan of Old Fashioned, if it is well done, and I always have a bottle or two of bourbon at home. I had already experimented with other sugars such as nut syrup or maple syrup, as well as different bitters to vary the taste, but this version of the cocktail is completely different.
After a dinner with a few good friends, including a bartender, we went to town to enjoy some cocktails. My friend dragged us into a hidden bar, without signs and a small door at the end of an alley. It was apparently the “place to be” if you liked the unusual cocktail scene. I have seen people order mini bathtubs, others a cupola in glossy metal or glasses filled with smoke. But seeing the words “Old Fashioned Rum”, made my clock tick!
Since that night, I make it regularly at home to impress guests, or when I’m tired of the classic (it happens rarely). Here are the ingredients:
- 2cl of rum (I use Diplomatico)
- 1cl of port (or less depending on preferences)
- 2 drops of Angostura bitter
- Maple syrup (or other sugar syrups)
- Orange peel
Stir a few minutes with a large ice cube and serve with a maraschino cherry (a little cherry syrup in the cocktail will not kill it)
