Baltany Watches – Great hommages on a budget
Baltany offers impressive vintage-inspired homage watches that combine classic design with surprising quality, especially considering the affordable price.

Baltany is one of those brands that initially seems like it could be just another homage brand straight off Alibaba. But as I explored their website, I was genuinely surprised by how transparent they are about their homage approach and their dedication to crafting vintage-inspired military watches.

Their collection is impressive, with designs that capture a nostalgic charm.

The real surprise came when I received one of their watches for review. The quality and craftsmanship, especially at this price point, were truly impressive.

Don’t just take my word for it—let’s dive into the details of the review.

I present to you, the Baltany Retro American 1921

The Brand

Baltany’s collection can be divided into two categories: modern homages and vintage-inspired watches.

The modern homages include pieces that resemble icons like the Rolex Explorer, Panerai Radiomir, and a few others.

However, most of their lineup belongs to the other category: vintage-inspired watches. They offer plenty of these, and many are truly captivating.

The prices are kept very low, mainly due to production in China and the use of Seagull or quartz movements. But in my opinion, that doesn’t detract from the quality of these watches.

Packaging

The Baltany Retro American 1921 arrived in a well-made cardboard box and included a charming leather travel pouch for one watch, along with a warranty card.

At this price point, I wasn’t expecting a leather pouch, so it was a pleasant surprise.

Design

The design of the Baltany Retro American 1921 is clearly a tribute to vintage driver watches and seems specifically inspired by the more modern Vacheron Constantin American 1921, as the name suggests.

The Vacheron Constantin Historiques American 1921

While the Vacheron Constantin itself is an homage, the Baltany has some distinctive features compared to its pricier counterpart. The Breguet-style numerals, for instance, aren’t simply printed but are applied metal with a polished surface, adding a touch of depth. The hands feature a classic spade shape, and the dial has a frosted finish that catches the light beautifully. Interestingly, the subdial for the seconds also offers a contrast, unlike the more expensive VC version.

The rest of the case and lugs are quite similar to the VC model, albeit with a flatter crown

When not comparing the two, the Baltany watch stands on its own, with a nicely balanced, square-cushion shape and lugs that resemble screws attaching the strap, giving it a solid, cohesive look.

The watch is both sophisticated and sporty, with a size and style that make it versatile enough to wear with a T-shirt or a button-up shirt, though I’d likely opt for something smaller when wearing a suit.

In short, this is a striking watch that looks fantastic, perhaps because it is respecting its heritage which made the design so classic and quirky at the same time.

Quality

Case & Crown

The watch is fully polished—and polished well. Running a finger over the edges reveals a sharp yet soft feel, consistent across the case.

The crown is also fully polished and isn’t a screw-down. It offers a very smooth winding experience with the Seagull movement, though it does require a fair amount of winding to fully charge. Thankfully, the crown’s flat and wide design makes it easy to grip. Setting the time is equally satisfying, with no wobble and a reassuringly solid feel.

Dial and hands

The dial on this watch is truly captivating. The base plate has a beautiful silver frosted texture that’s almost subtle in certain light but comes alive in sunlight or under bright illumination. It strikes a balance between being understated and eye-catching.

The printing on the dial is crisp and detailed, with a matte finish that contrasts nicely against the polished elements.

The Breguet-style numerals are highly polished and interact beautifully with light. Depending on the angle, they can either be almost invisible or stand out brilliantly.

The hands are also finely crafted, with a gentle curve that adds depth—a feature much harder to achieve than flat-stamped hands. They feel solid and three-dimensional, with a clear separation from the central mounting point that holds them to the movement.

The small running second-hand appears to be painted rather than heat-blued, but the application is so well done that it wasn’t immediately noticeable until seen under bright light.

Strap & Buckle

The strap on the American Retro is a fairly standard genuine leather strap, but it’s been nicely upholstered, with added thickness near the watch that tapers toward the edge. This design choice works well, as the watch itself is relatively heavy and thick, making a thinner strap look out of place.

I was fully expecting a generic, mass-produced buckle, but the Baltany buckle on this strap is impressively crafted. The polish is excellent, with well-defined edges that speak to a quality beyond typical generic buckles. It’s on par with the quality found in microbrand watches valued at around €1600, which is pretty remarkable.

Movement

This watch is powered by the Seagull ST700 movement. Information on this movement is sparse online, but Seagull is a Chinese brand that has recently gained popularity as a low-cost alternative for many microbrands needing reliable movements.

There’s a rumor that Seagull movements have a higher rate of “lemons”—meaning some may fail after a certain period. However, those that perform well tend to be solid and keep accurate time.

With Chinese movements, I generally prefer simpler mechanisms, and in my opinion, a hand-wind movement (as I opted for in this model) is a better choice than an automatic, which has more components that can break or wear out.

This watch keeps time quite well, losing around 20 seconds or less per day.

Quality Conclusion

Considering the very low price of around $169, this watch is incredibly well made. Given that both the brand and manufacturing are based in China, it’s likely that they have strong connections in production.

If this watch bore a Baltic logo, people would easily pay two to three times the price for it.

On the wrist

On my 17 cm wrist, this watch sits comfortably with a solid presence. Square cases like this tend to appear larger than their actual dimensions suggest, but the short, narrow, deeply angled lugs help reduce the perceived size significantly.

The watch also feels more luxurious, thanks to the slimness of the hand-wound version. At just 9.5 mm, it strikes a refined profile—anything above 12 mm with this case style would, in my opinion, appear too thick and lose its elegance.

The strap, while fairly standard, is quite comfortable and molds easily to my wrist after a few wears.

I’d recommend this watch for wrists above 15–16 cm in circumference. For smaller wrists, it may appear a bit too large.

Price

169 USD / 157 Euro

The price is extremely fair considering the quality you’re getting—even with the Chinese Seagull movement, which some watch enthusiasts may be hesitant about. If that’s a concern, opt for the quartz version, which is even cheaper, and enjoy the excellent finishing, cool details, and everything else this watch offers.

Conclusion

Baltany is a brand that genuinely offers intriguing vintage homage watches, and I’d gladly own several of them. It’s clear they’ve put effort into researching unique, classic watch designs and bringing them back to life. Yes, they are hommages, but that is ok!

What’s even more impressive is the quality you get at such a reasonable price—it’s truly remarkable. I find myself appreciating this watch more with each passing day

While I can’t fully vouch for the durability of the Seagull movement, nor say it’s been rigorously tested, if this watch brings me a few years of enjoyment at this price point, then I’m absolutely sold.

If you admire the Vacheron Constantin American 1921 but aren’t prepared to spend €40,000, this watch is certainly one that can satisfy that desire.
