Flirt (independent seconds)

By Frederik Drost

Flirt (independent seconds) is a term used in watchmaking to describe a complication that displays seconds independently of the watch’s primary timekeeping mechanism. This complication is usually found in mechanical watches and allows the wearer to monitor the passage of seconds without having to reset the watch or wait for a minute hand to make a full rotation. It is also useful for measuring short intervals of time, such as the time elapsed in a race. The independent seconds feature can be found in a variety of watch styles, from dress watches to chronographs.
