Balance Staff

By Frederik Drost

The balance staff is an essential part of a watch’s movement. It is a thin rod made of steel, brass, or other material and is positioned in the center of the movement. The staff is attached to a pair of pivots that support the balance wheel, which is responsible for regulating the timekeeping accuracy of the watch. The balance staff is critical for the watch to work properly, as it allows the balance wheel to freely rotate and oscillate while the watch is in motion. Without it, the watch would not be able to keep accurate time.
