Stopwork

By Frederik Drost

Stopwork is a mechanism fitted to a timepiece that prevents the mainspring from being overwound. It consists of a metal plate or lever which is fitted between the barrel and the mainspring. When the mainspring is fully wound, the stopwork prevents it from being wound any further, thus protecting the watch from being damaged. It also ensures that the mainspring can be fully wound each time it is wound, ensuring accuracy in timekeeping.
