Pawl (Click)

By Frederik Drost

A pawl (click) is a small mechanical device used in watches and clocks to ensure the wheel teeth engage correctly and to prevent the wheel from over-rotating. The pawl is a spring-loaded lever that clicks into an indentation on the wheel as it rotates, engaging the wheel and allowing it to move forward and backward. The pawl’s clicking sound is an audible indication that the wheel is correctly engaged and operating correctly.
